More BSL Action across Canada

September 20, 2004

This information has just come in from the BSL-Updates email list.

PROVINCE OF ONTARIO
Bryant has asked for input from Ontarians regarding pit bulls (His e-mail address is michael.bryant@jus.gov.on.ca). We urge those who have opinions about whether pit bulls should be allowed to let him know what they think. This will be a province wide ban superceding all other dog control bylaws in Ontario.Breeds under fire are"those that have been involved in brutal attacks and deaths in Canada."

Hamilton,Ontario
Hamilton has 421 licensed American pit bull terriers. Calum Burnett, the city's Animal Control Supervisor. By comparison, there are 940 licensed Rottweilers listed. "But the bottom line is that all dogs come down to responsible ownership."

E-mail: mayordiianni@hamilton.ca

Of 335 dog bite investigations in Hamilton this year, 19 have been pit bulls, Mayor Larry Di Ianni said. Personally, maybe there are some breeds of dogs that should not be pets.

Winnipeg,Manitoba
Tim Dac,CEO of animal control has provided his support to Mr Bryant against the pit bull. There are rumors Mr. Dack may also consider seeking the amendment of the bylaws to include rottweilers, although in a recent TV appearance he denied same.

Mayor Sam Katz and all other council members,go to this site and fill out the information as requested. http://www.winnipeg.ca/interhom/council/default.stm

VANCOUVER,BC.
Because of the Ontario Attorney General,Vancouver is considering their position in legislating a province wide ban on several breeds. This appears to be the opinion of the media moreso than mayor or council, but it is important to reaffirm their support!

E-mail the Mayor and Council as a group: mayorandcouncil@city.vancouver.bc.ca Mayor Campbell: larry_campbell@city.vancouver.bc.ca The Vancouver Sun newspaper: sunopinion@png.canwest.com provletters@png.canwest.com

Clarington,Durham Ontario
Mayor John Mutton officially announced his position on pit bulls during a meeting Tuesday evening in council chambers. Contacting the Mayor
His Worship John Mutton mayor@municipality.clarington.on.ca

Joining Attorney General Michael Bryant's pledge to look into banning pit bulls, the mayor altered his original stance to acknowledge that the process is complex and a ban may not be the only solution to consider. In Clarington, the motion to investigate the pit bull problem was carried and will be referred to staff for further study. newsroom@durhamregion.com

Due to recent incidences, there is a possibility that the rottweiler may be banned. We fought this battle before over the same issue and the same dog,and yet this dog has been allowed to become involved again in biting a child. http://www.communityprofiles.mb.ca/cgi-bin/csd/contacts.cgi?id=4603036
